Just 35 miles south of Louisville,
Elizabethtown is strategically located on I-65 in
the center of Kentucky's crossroads, surrounded by
some of the state's richest historic landmarks, breathtaking
lakes, forests and natural wonders and near Fort Knox
and many other points of interest. The town itself
is anchored with museums, quaint shops and plentiful
lodging.
Thomas Lincoln practiced carpentry
in the area while raising a future president. John
James Audubon, an early merchant of Elizabethtown,
later became distinguished as a great ornithologist
and illustrator. General George Armstrong Custer and
his wife took summer walks along the tree-lined streets.
These historic names are only a few of many.
Elizabethtown has grown to be a world
class city with homegrown atmosphere. The city's prime
location, combined with its natural resources, proximity
to neighboring Fort Knox, and the vision of its early
and present leaders, have made Elizabethtown a successful
location for industry and residents alike. The county
seat of Hardin County, Elizabethtown was established
in 1797 and named after the wife of one of its founders,
Andrew Hynes. The city itself encompasses 25 sq miles
of the 616 sq miles that make up Hardin County.
